Picked by Inspec - The Power of Using Small-Scale Wallpapers in Your Home

When it comes to choosing a wallpaper for your space, the sheer amount on offer can make the choice quite intimidating. To go big & bold or opt for something more subtle is the question on everyone’s lips, but if you’re looking for that sophisticated, timeless appeal without the risk of overwhelming your space, then I think you already know the answer.

If you’ve found that even a fresh coat of paint simply isn’t making the cut, then I can bet wallpaper will be the key to giving your home the sense of character and depth your heart desires.

Coming from Australia, I know first-hand just how difficult it can be for some clients to overcome their fear of colour and pattern. Although white is simple, clean and offers a blank canvas for decor, it’s undeniable this pure colour has led to a lack of expression and emotion in homes today.

Some clients may be surprised to find that a small-scale patterned wallpaper can also evoke that same calm & peaceful aesthetic that white often gives us.

Just the scale alone can completely shift the atmosphere of a space! Often the smaller patterns tend to create a visual rhythm that can make a room feel more layered and ultimately more spacious, without the feeling of overwhelming it.

Choosing a small print paper will give you the power of possibility when it comes to designing the rest of the room. Laura Stephens once told House & Garden that she loves “how [small scale wallpapers] give me the ability to layer on other types of patterns without feeling too busy.”

There’s no rules when it comes to choosing which area of the home needs a wallpaper and which doesn’t, but there certainly are specific spaces where a small-print can make all the difference. Through-out my career as a designer, I’ve found that my favourite places to use a smaller scale are bathrooms, dressing rooms, hallways or more interestingly, lining the cupboards or joinery!
